Cynthia Southerland, LUTCF
Insurance and Risk Assessment expert Cynthia Southerland has dedicated her career to helping people find the best solutions for their personal and professional financial and insurance needs.
Her company, Southerland & Associates, takes a holistic approach to financial health by offering a wide range of personal and business insurance services and financial consulting strategies.
Cynthia has a knack for understanding the complexities inherent in the insurance and financial industry – and for explaining them in terms her clients can understand. This knack comes naturally to Cynthia. She was a teacher in her early career; then gained comprehensive knowledge of the insurance field through first-hand experience addressing policyholders’ concerns as a customer service representative and assistant to other agents. Her knowledge deepened as she completed training to attain her Life Underwriter Training Council Fellow (LUTCF) designation.
Cynthia’s passion for helping and educating people found its perfect outlet when she founded Southerland & Associates in 1983. A true advocate for her clients, Cynthia is honored to bring peace of mind to individuals and business owners by listening closely to their risk management and financial planning concerns and finding the solutions that fit them to a tee.
What does Cynthia enjoy doing for fun? Helping others, including other species! Along with gardening, being in nature, delivering meals to the elderly and traveling, the activity that makes Cynthia smile is looking after the dogs she fosters – and sometimes adopts – through Heart of Texas Lab Rescue. Her smiling face is a frequent, welcome sight at events hosted by the many professional and civic organizations in which she participates.

Customer service and insurance have been mainstays of Melissa Meyer’s working life. Her on-the-job study of customer care began at the Austin roller skating rink she managed in 1989 and continued when she joined an insurance brokerage firm in her home state of Nebraska. From telemarketer to quality assurance representative to supervisor, Melissa’s increasingly responsible roles during her 13 years with the company gave her a broad perspective of multitude of insurance products available – and how to best evaluate these products and explain them. She also earned Nebraska licenses in Life and Annuities, Sickness, Accident and Health and in Property and Casualty.
Melissa accrued additional experience as an independent agent upon returning to Austin. She brings the knowledge gained working alongside insurance underwriters and agents to the clients she serves at Southerland & Associates.
Melissa is a problem-solver. Her favorite part of her role as customer service representative for Southerland & Associates is conducting a needs analysis with a client; then making sure the client has the correct combination of products, with no gaps or overlaps in coverage. She takes a proactive approach, staying in touch with clients to respond when their insurance needs change. If she doesn’t have the answers, she’ll find them.
A Nebraska native, this mother of two (and grandmother of a little guy who smiles a lot) now calls Texas home. Melissa says, “I wasn’t born in Texas, but I got here as fast as I could.” Aside from work, the things she loves best are family, cooking, traveling, and art projects.
